Washing on Croutons
Question:
Do I need to wash on croutons, which are made with bagel ingredients? Does it matter that the croutons are not the ikar of my salad?

Rabbi Bodner says (Halachos of Brachos, p. 36 in the back): packaged croutons sold in grocery stores are made from bread baked especially for the production of croutons; therefore, the brocha is mezonos. When eaten in salads or soups, make two brochos, first make mezonos and eat some croutons, then the appropriate brocha for the salad or soup. If the croutons were deep-fried, the brocha is mezonos according to all views. For homemade croutons, made from leftover bread which was toasted, make hamotzi. If eaten with salads or soups, two brochos are required. The hamotzi does not exempt the other foods eaten.
